John Von Rhein retired on July 1, 2018, as classical music critic of the Chicago Tribune, after serving more than 40 years in that position. Before joining the newspaper’s arts and entertainment staff in 1977, he was the music and dance critic of the Akron Beacon Journal, from 1971. He holds a B.A. degree in English from the University of California at Los Angeles and a B.A. in music from California State University at Los Angeles, where he also pursued Master’s degree studies in music. He is a native of Pasadena, Calif., and studied violin through his undergraduate and graduate studies in California. He received a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree from the DePaul University School of Music in 2011. He has contributed articles on music to Opera News, American Record Guide, Opera, Fanfare, Vanity Fair, Chicago Magazine, Boston Globe and other publications.
